Will You Be Ready When Disaster Strikes?

March 13, 2018

The question used to be, “will you be prepared if a disaster strikes?” Today, it’s almost certain your organization will face some type of unplanned disaster, be it a ransomware attack, hardware failure or hurricane – it’s just a matter of when. So why are companies, even some of the most recognized brands in the world that we’ve trusted for decades, failing to protect themselves and your personal information?

One would assume disaster recovery (DR) strategies and plans are in place, and are tested regularly. Or are they? Join Mindsight disaster recovery experts for a candid discussion on, Disaster Recovery for Today’s IT Environment, that will address your biggest questions and how best to protect your organization from catastrophic losses.

Sobering Statistics

Each year, cyberattacks have gotten more sophisticated and significantly more costly. Last year, global ransomware attacks, like WannaCry and NotPetya, showed us just how vulnerable companies are, especially when it comes to their data. WannaCry infected hundreds of thousands of machines around the world and caused an estimated $4 billion in losses. According to Cisco’s 2017 Annual Cybersecurity Report, ransomware alone is growing at a yearly rate of 350%.

And it’s not just small businesses being affected. Big brands like FedEx, Nissan, Merck, as well as major banks and healthcare facilities worldwide, were crippled by ransomware attacks last year. So the question remains, are DR plans in place? Are they being actively tested? Have organizations perceived backup solutions as sufficient “protection” thereby ignoring DR plans?

Here are some additional statistics:

  • 90% of businesses without a disaster recovery plan will fail after a disaster
  • Unplanned downtime costs between $926 to $17,244 per minute
  • 35% of companies lose at least one business-critical application when hit with a disaster
  • Recovery efforts eat up 25% of staff time
  • 12% of companies could not recover data based on 2017 studies
  • 1 in 3 businesses were unprepared for disaster, despite having a plan
  • Ransomware detections were up 90%
  • Spyware is making a comeback
  • 96% of companies survive ransomware if they have a reliable backup and disaster recovery solution

The Difference Between Backup and Disaster Recovery

Data backup and disaster recovery are often thought of as being one and the same. This confusion could prove to be one’s biggest nightmare. So what are the differences between the two and why do you need both? Simply stated, backup is the replication of your original files in a different location or device, whereas disaster recovery gives you the power to recover all the files and data quickly, easily, and without corruption. Imagine your nightmare if a server died. You’d have to replace the server, re-install the software and data, and then configure all the set-up according to your settings and preferences. This process could take hours, or worse yet, days. When security breaches occur, data backup is simply NOT a sufficient precaution. Think of a backup strategy as the beginning step in establishing a proper DR plan. Where a backup is just a copy of your data, a disaster recovery plan is the lifeline that ensures the guarantee of the recovery.
