Data backup strategy can both feel like a huge hassle and an essential responsibility of the IT department. That’s an understandable position if you use a tape backup solution. Though tape has proven to be the go-to data backup strategy for decades, times are changing. The cloud is here and offers a far more convenient way to manage, store, and access data backups. However, as convenient as the cloud may be, it is not a perfect solution. It has the potential to cost significantly more than tape, but then again, that cost must be weighed against the savings gained from efficiency. In technology, it’s not always a clear cut answer.
Take a look at our infographic below, where we outline some of the conveniences of the cloud compared to tape backup.
The Differences between Tape and Cloud
- Difficulties in transporting and storing tape backups
- How to access each form of backup
- Differing maintenance requirements between the two platforms
- Cost considerations
Not for Everyone
The cloud offers tremendous value and agility in a backup strategy, but it is not a catch-all solution for every company. In many respects, a cloud-only solution will prove to be less cost effective than you might have hoped. Every company is different, and different factors in each organization will warrant a certain approach to data backup.
