On June 20, 2017, Cisco made an enormous announcement. Without exaggeration, they are calling this their biggest announcement of the decade and that this new technology is going to usher in a new era of networking. They claim to have solved one of the biggest challenges of networking in general, and they are very excited to release it to the public. With so much hype, what could this solution possible be? What transformative technology is being released?
It’s called the Network. Intuitive, and it may very well be the breakthrough Cisco is claiming.
What Is the Network. Intuitive?
The Network. Intuitive is an umbrella term to describe a new set of network innovations being released this summer. The Network. Intuitive consists of the following:
- Encrypted Traffic Analytics (ETA): Using machine learning algorithms and an enormous set of networking traffic data, Cisco has identified enough similarities in encrypted data to recognize malware without decrypting it. The old dynamic between security and privacy in network traffic is now a non-factor. We can maintain privacy and ensure network traffic is free from malware.
- Catalyst 9000 Switches: Though ETA and other features of the Network. Intuitive can be leveraged using existing Cisco equipment, Cisco is also going to release a new line of Catalyst network switches known as the 9000 series. These switches are designed for the modern network, meaning that they are ready to support the internet of things (IoT), ETA, mobile devices, and the cloud.
- DNA-Center: The DNA-Center will serve as the command center for the Network Intuitive. It will be a centralized, on-premise or cloud-hosted dashboard to manage network rules and policies. In addition, DNA-Center will also provide analytics services which will assemble network data from every switch, router, and wireless access points from throughout the entire network.
A New Era of Networking
Though these advances are important and significant, it is important to recognize how Cisco is framing the Network. Intuitive. They are calling it a new era of networking, and it most certainly is. With the ability to provide security without decrypting network traffic, we can being to use encryption far more liberally than before leading to enhanced security and more privacy across the board.
