Podcasts. Whether you love them or hate them, they’re here to stay. Some of you may be asking “why are podcasts still a thing?” while others can’t get enough of them. There are currently over 700,000 active podcasts with 29 million available episodes. In fact, we’re seeing the emergence of “Big Podcast” with Amazon, Spotify, and iHeartRadio getting in on the action of producing and distributing podcasts. With people commuting and venturing out into the world again, this sort of on-demand content is going to get more and more popular.
If you’re new to podcasts, or stopped paying attention circa 2011, there is a podcast for every niche interest. Your grandma’s favorite sitcom The Golden Girls? There are at least 15 podcasts. Obscure topics like nutritional anthropology? I counted at least 13. And let’s not get started on the True Crime genre. The amount of content that exists in the world of podcasts is mind-blowing – it’s hard to separate the wheat from the chaff.
So, with all this in mind, we present to you (in no particular order) seven tech podcasts for IT professionals.
Technovation
This twice-weekly podcast features conversations between C-Levels and other thought-leaders in the fields of business, technology, and innovation. Each episode focuses on tech trends that are changing business, and how the leaders of these businesses drive this change. Peter High, author of Implementing World Class IT Strategy hosts and topics range from AI, leadership positions, women in tech, and entrepreneurship.
Who should listen: business executives, IT directors, or just people who are passionate about the intersection of business and technology.
Analog(ue)
At the end of the day, most people stare at a medium-sized screen all day and then reward themselves later by alternating between staring at the big screen and small screen. Humans are connected to their devices more than ever, not just physically but emotionally. If 2020 taught us anything, it would be that connecting with other humans “together but apart” is entirely possible. Knowing all this, cohosts Myke Hurley and Casey Liss discuss how our devices make us feel, for better or worse.
Who should listen: any tech professional who wants to feel the softer side of technology
Risky Business
Sorry Tom Cruise fans, this has nothing to do with the 80’s cult classic. Instead, this weekly podcast discusses one of our favorite topics as Mindsight, Cybersecurity. Hosted by award-winning journalist Patrick Gray, Risky Business covers news in cybersecurity and trends such as doxing scammers, security risks, and the latest in ransomware.
Who should listen: cybersecurity professionals, risk management professionals
Clockwise
Hosted by Dan Moren and Mikah Sargent, Clockwise follows the round-table discussion format with the two hosts and two industry guests. The 30 minute episodes cover a range of topics from internet of things (IoT) to the latest updates to common, and widely used, applications, to even the latest news on our favorite streaming services.
Who should listen: tech professionals that want to stay up-to-date on the latest tech news
Command Line Heroes
A original RedHat podcast, host and developer Saron Yitbarek tells the stories of those that made open-source what it is, and what it means for the future. Each of the 7 seasons are themed. Some episodes focus on an individual and humanizes their work and how that work has been applied, while other episodes dive into certain types of hardware or coding languages.
Who should listen: people that are newer to the tech industry who would like to learn the history of computing, seasoned IT professionals who want to take a trip down memory lane
Twenty Thousand Hertz
Since humans began recording audio, there are thousands of “sounds” that we instantly recognize. Don’t believe me? Think of the “ba dum” of Netflix, not to be confused by the “ba dum” of a gavel pounding in an episode of Law and Order. What about the Wilhelm Scream? If you are a woman of a certain age (not unlike this author), there is only one way to read the words “you’ve got mail”.
Creator and host of Twenty Thousand Hertz delves into the stories of the world’s most recognizable sounds. Though not directly a tech topic, this podcast covers the science and technology behind how these sounds were conceived and have been made popular.
Who should listen: audiophiles, cinephiles, or those just interested in the relationship between sound, technology, and pop culture.
Darknet Diaries
The internet is full of podcasts about technology. The internet is also full of podcasts about true crime. It’s only natural that there would exist a podcast about both, right? Enter Darknet Diaries. Hosted and created by cybersecurity veteran Jack Rhysider simply because he couldn’t find such a podcast.
Darknet Diaries started as Jack’s solo project in 2017, and has since grown to a team of writers, editors, graphic designers, and researchers. In each episode, Jack discusses a particular cybersecurity event or breach and breaks down the players involved, their methods, and any outcomes in a way so both technical and non-technical listeners are educated and entertained.
Who should listen: cybersecurity professionals, business leaders who are trying to develop a cybersecurity culture
