Charting Your Path to the Cloud with Mindsight

June 30, 2017

The cloud has become a common topic of conversation in business and IT circles and for good reason. The cloud offers businesses an opportunity to have their cake and eat it too. They can deploy virtually any application they want, utilize a nearly endless infrastructure, and avoid the daunting refresh and maintenance costs the deployment would usually require. Furthermore, this means that you can finally turn your IT budget into a predictable, reliable document. The problem isn’t the cloud itself, it is finding your path to the cloud.

For that reason, Mindsight offers the  Mini Cloud Assessment – typically complimentary – consulting service.

Barrier to the Cloud

It’s important to first briefly lay out why such a consulting service might exist in the first place. To put it simply, migrating to the cloud is by no means simple. A data center environment is guaranteed to have a web of application interdependencies. The apps rely on each other to work properly. Extracting one application without taking into account these interdependencies could cause this app to fail once migrated. In addition, in many public cloud environments, the client is billed on the amount of data entering and leaving the cloud. Taking an app in and out for reconfigurations can rack up a significant bill in a short amount of time.

Mindsight’s Path the Cloud

With some of the challenges laid out before us, the Path to the Cloud Roadmap provides a definitive solution. One of the first things our does is perform a thorough analysis of the environment. As part of that analysis, our consultant will map out the application interdependencies discussed earlier, so your business can truly see the task ahead.

Along the way, we also note which applications are primed and ready for the cloud immediately and discuss 3rd party Software as a Service alternatives to some existing apps in your environment. This allows you to score some quick wins and begin the process of your migration.

The flip side of this process is that our consultants will also identify which applications should not migrate to the cloud at all. Certain line of business applications or apps on bare-metal servers may not be compatible with the modern cloud. Alternatively, these applications may be best suited in your environment.

It’s Not Only Which Apps but When

Another key component of our Path to the Cloud Roadmap is the roadmap itself. We’ve already discussed the tangled web of application interdependencies and the dangers of blindly pulling apps out of the environment, so this process must be executed thoughtfully and carefully.

Our consultants will map out a timeline for how and when to safely untangle your applications in the least disruptive way possible. The length of this timeline will largely depend on the environment in question, but at the end of it, you’ll have achieved your cloud migration goals.
