Mindsight Fights Food Insecurity with 3rd Annual Hunger Games

November 24, 2016

Every year from mid-October to mid-November, Mindsight hosts our Hunger Games competition for our employees. Through various tasks, donations, and volunteering, the Hunger Games seeks to raise awareness and fight against the challenges of hunger in the modern world. In the past, Mindsight employees have donated canned goods and volunteered at food depositories, soup kitchens, and local farms to help ensure that fewer families in Chicago face food uncertainty this November.

This year, Mindsight employees were at it again, and we accomplished some great things.

The 3rd Annual Hunger Games: Tic Tac Toe for Hunger

Last year’s Hunger Games were structured around a bingo board. Participants would need to complete challenges to earn a square. The first team to reach bingo won. This year, however, we selected Tic Tac Toe as the foundation of our game.

The Rules:

The company was split into four teams. Each team then competed head to head to complete three squares in a Tic Tac Toe board. Each square was filled with a unique challenge or task that must be completed in order to earn the square.

From there, the two winning teams automatically advanced to the final round, while the two losing teams faced off in a tie-breaker challenge for a wild card slot in Hunger Jeopardy.

The three remaining teams then engaged in a game of Hunger Jeopardy as a representative from each team answered trivia questions related to hunger and food insecurity in America.

The Results:

After some fierce (and friendly) competition amongst the teams, Team 2 emerged victorious in our 3rd Annual Hunger Games. The most important thing, however, is the difference that Mindsight employees made along the way.

  • Dress Down Day: Employees were offered the opportunity to dress in casual attire on October 31st so long as they gave a minimum $5 donation to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. In total, this small gesture was able to raise $140 for the depository.

  • Non-Perishable Food Donations: Competitors in the games each donated five cans or packages of non-perishable foods for the Wheaton Food Pantry. Through the generosity of the team, we collected 292 cans and packages of food.

  • Name That Food: The mission of the Hunger Games is to not only raise money and donations for charities. It is also our mission to raise awareness of hunger issues and food. The Name that Food Game challenged our team to learn about new foods and cuisines they may not be aware of.

  • Donating Spare Change: Coinstar is currently running an initiative in which you can donate some of your spare change through their machines to Feeding America, a non-profit charity. The Mindsight team raised more than $80 to help this cause.

  • Bank of America: Bank of America is also helping out Feeding America this holiday season by allowing people to donate a meal directly through their Give a Meal program. 660 meals were donated in the name of Mindsight and ending food insecurity in Chicago.

  • Volunteering: We’d like to specifically commend one of our employees, Ivo, for taking time out of his busy schedule to volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository during the Hunger Games.

“Being able to volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository was a fun and enjoyable experience. I’m grateful for having the opportunity to give back and impact the lives of those in need in a positive way.”

The Fight Doesn’t End with the Games

The Hunger Games go a long way in helping to raise awareness and motivate our team to take action to solve some of the hunger challenges we face in Chicago, but it’s only one month out of the year. There are still eleven other opportunities to make a difference.

If you have time, money, food, or good intentions to share, we encourage you to reach out to organizations like the Greater Chicago Food Depository and the People’s Resource Center to see how you can help.

Happy Thanksgiving from Mindsight!
